“Our greatest natural resource is the minds of our children.” Walt Disney
In September our family went on a two week long vacation to Florida. We spent time before, during and after the trip learning all about Walt Disney, Walt Disney World and Florida. We covered a variety of topics, spanning all the subject areas except math. We have a curriculum for math that I stick to. Here are some of the things we did.
We Read Books 📕
We Watched Videos 📹
We Learned about Roller Coasters
We Designed our Own Theme Parks
Kahn Academy Design Your Own Theme Park Course
Picked a theme for their land
Drew the layout of the land, that included ride shops and restaurants
Created a color scheme
Created graphics
Created a restaurant menu
Created the character that would represent their land
Sticker
Anika created her own Mickey Mouse Sticker. She drew the Mickey Mouse and then figured out how to put it into canva and then print on sticker paper.
Walt Disney World Countdown
Anika also created a Walt Disney World Countdown Calendar for herself and Jake. There was a suprise inside each day leading up to our departure for the trip.
We Completed a Florida Report and Lapbook
I love this free Lapbook from Kiki’s Classroom
I also used some of Waldock Way “Traveling the States” Florida to help with this one.
We Wrote a Walt Disney Report
“When you believe in a thing, believe in it all the way, implicitly and unquestionable.” Walt Disney
Walt Disney was inspiring. He’s confidence and determination are to be admired. He was innovative and always on the lookout for ways to do things better. From inventing the multi plane camera, which was groundbreaking in animation, to perfecting the trashcan (creating a swinging lid to keep the smell out) he was an engineer. The kids and I loved learning about his life story. We used Book Sharks Walt Disney Unit Study and Waldock Way Walt Disney Mini Unit Study to help us with this one.
We Rode Walt Disney World Rides
Spaceship Earth
We went on Spaceship Earth at Epcot and learned about important moments in history that made today’s communications technology possible. The ride starts at the beginning of humanity, with caveman and shows how our evolution happened over time. At the end you get to design your own future world.
Walt Disney Presents
We walked through Walt Disney Presents at Hollywood Studios and saw a Gallery showcasing Walt Disney’s life story. There were Sketches, photos, models, costumes and artwork. We even saw a multi plane camera!
Maharajah Jungle Trek
This was a walking trail with various animals that included tigers. There was an aviary with over 50 species of birds. Our favorite part was the bats.
Wilderness Explorer Program
The Wilderness Explorer Program is a series of fun, nature-themed challenges that earn you badges to become an official Wilderness Explorer. Self-guided activities range from animal observation to learning important wilderness skills.
Kilimanjaro Safaris
We rode an open air safari vehicle onto the Harambe Wildlife Reserve. They have 30 different species of animals on 110 acres of land. An expert guide pointed out the animals and shared some facts with us. We saw a hippo, ostrich elephant, giraffes , crocodiles, painted dogs and lions to name a few. The lions were actually roaring!
DINOSAUR
Although we didn’t actually ride the Dinosaur ride, the queue and the outside of this ride are amazing. First we saw Dino-Sue, a reproduction of a full size t-rex unearthed in South Dakota. We also saw real fossil that date back to the dinosaur age inside the queue line. There is a bunch of replica fossils inside other glass cases too.
We Explored Florida Beaches
Hurricanes
We were so fortunate to make it home from our trip right before two major hurricanes hit Florida. Watching these events unfold on the news was heartbreaking. A lot of the places that were seeing the most destruction we had just visited. The kids had many questions and we spent some time learning about how hurricanes to try and answer them.
We Listened to Disney Tunes
Listened to this Spotify Playlist a lot!
“All the adversity I’ve had in my life, all my troubles and obstacles, have strengthened me… You may not realize it when it happens, but a kick in the teeth may be the best thing in the world for you.” Walt Disney

My brothers and I would have loved the fun study units your family did while at Disney World. I hated physics in high school but studying the physics of roller coasters and other rides? That would be so much fun. Even the spinning teacups could be interesting from the standpoint of physics. Having the kids make a count down calendar and help plan? Genius! Home study at Disney World – how could life be better for your kids?
Thank you! We had a lot of fun with it. I also hated physics, but am getting a new found appreciation for it through our homeschool experiences. And oooooh, yes the teacups! That’s a good idea!
