For our first camping trip of the season we headed up to the White Mountains to stay at Jigger Johnson campground. This is a no reservation campsite along the Kancamagus Highway. This was our first time trying out camping with our new pop up camper. We arrived early and found a fantastic spot.
The campsite
We parked and began the process of setting things up. Set up was simple and took much less time then putting up our tent.
Drive up the Kanc
After we were settled we decided to take a drive up along the Kanc. The plan was to find one of the rivers along the way to play, splash, swim and cool off in.
We drove for a bit and enjoyed the stunning views.
Finally we found a place that looked empty. We parked along the road and walked until we found a gorgeous spot. It had a tiny sandy beach, mountains in the background and a crystal clear cold river. The water felt so good. We spent a couple of hours here….exploring the tiny waterfalls and playing on the rocks. The kids found a giant slanted rock and turned it into their own personal water slide.
After eating our picnic lunch on the little beach by the river we decided to head back.
Dinner and S’mores
When we arrived at our campsite we first took the kids for a short bike ride, then Jamie made dinner. We kept it simple with some delicious cheeseburgers.
After dinner we had a campfire with s’mores, and then read in the camper before bed.
The Swift River
Today we decided to check out the campsites access to the Swift River. After a short walk we found the river and our own little private beach and swimming area. We only saw one other couple that had started at the top of the river and were floating the length of the camp site down. This seemed like something the kids would love and we added this to our list of future outing ideas.
We stayed her for awhile before heading back to our campsite to play, while Jamie cooked us some spaghetti. This was followed by a campfire with more s’mores and some glow stick fun.
Headed Home
The next morning Jamie cooked bacon and eggs for breakfast and then we started the process of cleaning and packing up.
Our first camping trip was definitely a success. We learned some things we could do differently for next time. I kept a note on my phone of things that worked, things that didn’t and things we should purchase. I’m super excited for camping round two.
