At the beginning of June, we had a camping trip to Lost River Valley Campground in North Woodstock, New Hampshire scheduled. We had booked this reservation back in November. This was just a week after my dad’s initial cancer diagnosis. In an attempt to keep normalcy in our lives we decided to still go.
I am so glad we did. Being outside in beautiful scenery, watching our kids splash and play in the river and show how easily they are entertained by rocks, was fantastic.
Lost River Valley Campground
We arrived at Lost River Valley Campground on Friday afternoon. The staff was friendly and the campground was clean and pretty. Our site (we stayed at site 66 this trip) was small and although close to other campsites there were still enough trees in between to provide privacy. It was also directly on a river.
Pizza and a Movie Night
The kids immediately wanted to check out the river, which was perfect because our campsite was right there. Jamie and I set up while they explored on the rocks.
Once we were set up Jamie found a pizza place, Enzo’s Pizzeria in Lincoln and we decided to stick to our weekly Friday pizza and a movie night tradition. We headed into town to pick up the pizza and ate at the campsite while Jamie streamed the movie Home on Netflix on his phone. After we sat by the fire for a bit before finishing the night by reading a little Harry Potter.
The Flume Gorge
The next morning we woke up, Jamie made omelets for breakfast, and then we headed to The Flume Gorge. We had a 9:00 AM reservation.
We arrived at the Flume Gorge, checked in, and started the hike. It took us a couple of hours to do the whole loop.
We headed back to the campsite with a quick stop at the grocery store in Lincoln for some food for lunch and dinner. Jamie grilled hotdogs. The kids wanted to have a picnic on the rocks on the river, so we did.
Wading in the River
After lunch, the kids immediately changed into swimsuits and spent the rest of the afternoon swimming and playing in the river. It was hot so it was the perfect way to spend the afternoon.
Anika let me know that this was her favorite campsite yet. I’m pretty sure the immediate access to the river was the reason why.
Ice Cream and Lupines in Sugar Hill
After everyone was cooled off we decided to go for a drive to Sugar Hill to see the fields of lupines I had read about online. Anika loves the book Miss Rumphius and has been a big fan of lupines since discovering it. We also wanted to see if we could find some ice cream along the way.
We ended up stopping at Sammy P’s ice cream in Franconia Notch at Franconia Market and Deli.
After a scenic drive up 93 while we enjoy our icecream we made it to Sugar Hill. This town was kind of ridiculous in how charming it was. Straight out of a movie depicting an idealistic small New Hampshire farm town. We found the biggest field of lupines and it did not disappoint, however Lupines are everywhere you look in this town. It was fun to constantly be on the lookout for them.
After we had our fill of lupines we headed back to the campsite where Jamie made burgers for dinner. It was raining a bit at this point but we had moved everything under our awning before we left so it was not a problem. We ate inside the pop-up on our table, which was also fun.
Checking out the Playground
After dinner, the rain had stopped and we walked down to the playground for a bit. The highlights included a pirate ship and a wooden train. The kids were big fans of both.
We walked back to the campsite where we sat by the fire for a bit, roasted some marshmallows, and then headed into the pop-up to get ready for bed and read a little more Harry Potter.
Packing up and Heading Home
The next morning Jamie made egg sandwiches for breakfast and then the kids immediately changed into swimsuits and spent more time playing in the river while Jamie and I packed everything up. About mid-morning we headed back home.
This was an excellent campground and an excellent campsite. I recommend both. We have already booked our trip for next year since some sites book out two years in advance! We typically camp in the North Conway area of the white mountains so it was fun to check out the Franconia Notch and Lincoln side of things. There is a ton to do and we are excited to go back.
