Camping Maine Travel

Peaks-Kenny State Park, Dover-Foxcroft Maine July 2024

Last fourth of July we fell in love with Peaks-Kenny State Park in Dover-Foxcroft, Maine. When making camping reservations this year we knew this was top of our list of spots we want to visit.

There are no bad camping spots at this 56 site campground. Each spot is clean, well maintained and spaced out nicely from the others. There’s plenty of woods to separate you from your neighbor allowing for ample privacy. This year we had our eye on a spot closer to the walking trails to the lake with water and electricity. Sites like this book up quickly the morning the reservations go live, but we booked it exactly at 9 AM and got the spot we were hoping for!

This year we stayed at site 56 and loved it!

Site 56 is big, flat and of course we were totally spoiled with the water and electricity at our site.

We knew this was going to be a memorable trip when upon arrival our camping neighbors were giving away free snow cones. Yep, kids were pretty pleased about that one.

We got settled, ate lunch and then immediately headed to the lake. It was only about a six minute walk on a trail through the woods to get there. There were two paths to choose from.

Pathway to the beach

The weather was beautiful. Sunny and hot. Perfect for swimming.

We swam for a couple of hours and then headed back to the campsite for dinner and s’mores.

It was the fourth of July today so we also have some fun with sparklers and glow toys.

Sparkler fun! 🎆

Day Two

Day two we headed into Dover-Foxcroft for a bit and then back to campsite with the plan to spend the day at the lake. The weather was suppose to be hot and sunny all day. The kids and I blew up a bunch of inflatables and we headed down.

One of my favorite things about Peaks Kenny is that even fourth of July weekend with absolutely perfect weather this place never feels packed. Coming from New Hampshire, places that are comparable (White Lake for example) are insansenly crowded on days lake this. Just one of the many reasons we are so happy to have moved home to Maine.

We spent the whole afternoon at the lake only leaving once so the kids could get free cotton candy from the camping neighbors who were giving out snow cones yesterday.

The kids had lots of hammock time this trip.

We got pizza for dinner from Toto’s House of Pizza and ended our night with s’mores and a campfire. Then we all snuggled up in our camper and watched the first Shrek movie.

Day 3

We woke up to rain…with light rain and clouds in the forecast all day. We decided to start our morning with a ride in town. We went to Dunkin Donuts (we prefer local donut shops but Dover-Foxcroft didn’t have one), stopped at a local farmers market where we bought a beautiful handmade leather bracelet from Wandering Raven Collective for Jamie’s sister’s birthday and finally stopped to check out a local thrift store called Win Win.

We got back to the campsite where there was a slight break in the rain. After eating a quick lunch we headed down to a very deserted lake where the kids and Jamie swam and explored for a couple of hours. I happily walked along the shore and waded in the water near them while still wearing multiple layers of clothing on top. Too cold for me!

We discovered this new area of Peaks-Kenny today that was so beautiful! This place is amazing. 💛
The kids ended their time at the lake today digging this whole that Jake could sit in. 🤣

After a couple of hours at the lake we headed back to our campsite. Taking full advantage of the electricity at our site I popped the kids some popcorn in our microwave and put a movie on for them. Jamie made a fire and he and I sat by it and read for a bit enjoying, the break in the rain.

SUPER Happy kids about to watch Scooby Doo.

Shortly after the kids movie was over the rain started to pick back up again. Jamie made us some burgers for dinner and we ate them inside at our table and spent the rest of the evening playing Chess, Sushi Go and Monopoly Junior. It’s times like today that I am so thankful for our camper. When camping we are completely unbothered by the rain and it’s almost like we have our own little hotel room. We finished our night by watching the second Shrek movie.

We easily packed up our things (another reason I love our camper) and headed back home Sunday morning. The kids said this was their favorite camping trip yet, and their favorite spot to camp and I have to say I 100 percent agree.
