Lego Homeschool Unit Study 🇩🇰

The kids picked LEGO as their next unit study topic. Here are some of the things we did.

History of Lego

We started off this unit study by learning about the history of LEGO.

We watched this video and we read the book “What is Lego” by Jim O’Connor.

Red Fox Playset

Anika, inspired by the story of LEGO, created a “Red Fox Playset”.  Using paper she created a fox, fox friend, camping equipment (tent, picnic table, fire, sleeping bag, smores, food etc.) We filmed herself showing the playset and then edited on my phone using iMovie.

Denmark

Next we learned about Denmark (The birthplace of LEGO)

We found Denmark on a map and read about it in the Lonely Planet Kids Amazing World Atlas. Side note we love this book and reference it a lot. Definitely one that has a permanent spot in our library.

We watched some YouTube Videos about Denmark and read some books about it too.

LEGO Science

Next up we did a little LEGO science.

We learned about:

🧑‍🔬States of Matter (Liquids, Solids and Gases)

👨‍🔬Physical vs Chemical Change

🧪Reversible vs Irreversible Change

We experimented with two physical changes using these LEGO shaped silicone molds I purchased from Amazon. We discussed whether they were reversible or irreversible changes.

We changed a liquid into a solid by making LEGO orange juice pops.

Then we change a solid into a liquid and then back again into a solid by making LEGO shaped crayons. I used Little Bins for Little Hands Make you Own LEGO Crayons instructions.

Lego Self Portraits

We did this Lego Self Portrait activity from Little Bins and Bricks

Jake’s Self Portrait

LEGO Lapbook

We completed the Walking by the Way free Lapbook.

LEGO Math

We did some of Frugal Fun for Boys and Girls Math Challenge Cards with LEGO Bricks and some of Frugal Fun for Boys and Girls First Grade Math with LEGO Bricks printable Pack.

Design Your Own LEGO Character

This was the highlight of the unit study for the kids.

I purchased a bunch of assorted lego mini figures in bulk off of Amazon, took them all apart, dumped them on our kitchen table and task the kids with creating their own LEGO mini figure character. They followed up with using this LEGO Mini Figure Characteristics sheet to describe their newly created character. I’ve linked it for free if you are interested in making one too!

After that we used a free stop motion app and this LEGO mini figure photography kit Anika received for Christmas to create some of their own stop motion mini figure movies. Unsurprisingly this was their absolute favorite part of this unit study.

Design your own LEGO Set

I tasked the kids with designing both their own LEGO set as while as creating the instruction manual to go with it. They each created a LEGO set, then took it apart, took pictures of each step and then used Canva to add the pictures and adjust them to the size they wanted. Anika even came up with the idea to have a “featured set” page and they each included a picture of the others set in the back of their manual. They also had the idea to have an about the creator page that was equally as adorable.

The LEGO Movie

We finished up this unit study by watching both the first and second LEGO Movies.
